What is a Psychiatric NP?

A family psychiatric nurse practitioner (also called a family psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, or FPMHNP) is a registered nurse with advanced academic and clinical experience in the areas of both child and adult psychiatry.  Psychiatric NPs provide a full spectrum of psychiatric care, including the assessment, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of psychiatric disorders and mental health problems.

One of the advantages of seeing a psychiatric nurse practitioner is that we can provide both individual and family therapy (as psychologists, social workers, and counselors do) as well as medication management services (as psychiatrists do).
